Funeral services for Geronimo Valdez Garay, 88, of Lovington will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 at 11:00 am at St. Thomas Catholic with Father Joe Pacquing officiating. Burial will follow at Lovington Cemetery. Jeronimo was born on September 30, 1937 in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico to Maclovio Valdez Balderrama and Manuela Garay Salazar and passed away on April 30, 2026. Geronimo married Bertha Mendoza Pena on August 29, 1959 in Chihuahua Mexico they shared 66 years together. Geronimo was a deeply compassionate man, overflowing with love for his family. He turned every meal into a celebration; if we prepared a dish he particularly enjoyed, he would immediately start making calls to invite everyone over to share in that meal—a dish he considered truly delicious. He cherished family gatherings, always planning parties well in advance and taking it for granted that they would indeed take place. He loved it when we asked him to make the calls—whether to organize a reunion or to coordinate contributions for a specific event or family need. He was constantly looking out for his entire family; if he knew someone was away from home, he would call to ensure they were safe and to find out when they would return. His phone could never be allowed to run out of battery, for as soon as he finished breakfast, he would begin making calls, reaching out to greet everyone he could. He and his beloved wife made a wonderful team: she would hand him whatever was just out of his reach, while he served as her memory, taking it upon himself to remind her of the date each day. Every night he would ask her to lead the bedtime prayers and the Rosary every morning—never forgetting to mention each and every one of his children grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be deeply missed.
