Obituary of James Walton Spears

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Memorial services for J. W. Spears Jr, 59, of Lovington, NM will be held on Friday, February 21, 2020 at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall with Bro. Matt Bridges officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Kirby-Smith-Rogers Funeral Home. J. W. was born on December 17, 1960 in Denver City, TX to James W. "Lefty" and Ouida Spears and passed away on February 6, 2020 in Lovington. He was a 1979 graduate of Lovington High School and attended New Mexico State for one semester. After high school he went to work in the oilfield and spent many years working his way up to pumper. J.W. participated in High School Rodeo and his team went to National's in team roping in Wyoming. He has always enjoyed team roping and he was so proud of his two beloved sons and what amazing ropers they were. They both had as deep of a passion for the sport as he did and had such a natural ability handling a rope. Growing up he helped work on the farm, doing whatever needed taking care of and was a pretty good "handy man". He liked doing things his way and could be a little stubborn about things if he thought his way was best. He was all boy, annoying his sisters and giving his mom a hard time about things they now laugh about, such as his mom chasing him down the road but couldn't catch him for whatever antic he had pulled and pushing Kirestie to the limit, but he was a good guy and quite the charmer. He enjoyed dancing and his favorite dance was with his daughter, Karie at her wedding. Music was important to J. W. and his favorite was Classic Rock and Country. His family was his greatest love, from idolizing his Dad to loving his mom; to teasing his sisters and loving his sons and daughter and especially his grandkids, oh how he loved his grandchildren! He was a "one of a kind" man and will be missed by all who loved him. Preceding him in death was his dad: Lefty Spears and his son: Koly Ray Spears. Surviving him is his mother: Ouida Spears of Lovington; his son: Kelly Shay and wife Chelsea Spears of Lovington and one daughter: Karie and husband Josh Pickerel of Midland, TX; two sisters: Kirestie and husband Dean Jackson of Lovington and Carla and husband Dicky Jones of Leander, TX and two precious grandchildren: Lane Spears & RayDon Pickerel.
