Rosa Derrick
November 05, 1922 - March 21, 2011
Funeral services for Rosey “Rosa” May Derrick, 88, of Lovington, will be held on Friday, March 25, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Jackson Ave Baptist Church with Bro. Ron Ragland officiating. Burial will follow at Lovington Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Kirby-Smith-Rogers Funeral Home. Rosa was born on November 5, 1922 in Lueders, TX to Jack M. and Laura Belle (Morton) Clevenger and passed away on Monday, March 21, 2011 at Lea Regional Hospital in Hobbs. She and her family came West in a covered wagon when she was 5 years of age and she started school in Beulah, TX. Being the oldest of 10 children she helped take care of them as they were growing up. She came to Lovington in 1952 and worked at the soda fountain for B & J Drug where she was introduced to Veach Payne, whom she later married. They owned and operated the Cotton Warehouse and Rosa was the bookkeeper for the business. She was a long-time member of Jackson Ave Baptist Church, served as a Pink Lady, was a Brownie Troop leader and taught a ceramics class at the Good Samaritan Center and also baked sugar cookies and took to Good Sam. She was an avid fan of her coffee time in the afternoon with friends and most importantly, Rosa was very family oriented. Loving and caring for her family was her role and desire in life and she filled that role with excellence.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Lloyd Wills, Veach Payne and Eddie Derrick, four brothers: J. W., Johnny, Donald and Steve Clevenger and two sisters: Rita Green and Bessie Stuart.
She is survived by two daughters: Barbara (Shields) and husband Phil Wallace of Lubbock, TX and June and husband Richard Robinson of Eunice, NM; one stepson: Cliff and wife Jan Payne of Lovington; two brothers: Wayne and wife Diana Clevenger of Abilene, TX and Tommy and wife Chris Clevenger of Kilgore, TX and one sister: Geneva Fulton of Wylie, TX; 5 grandchildren and 5 step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Also surviving her are her dear friends, Charles and Loretta McCormack and Mike and Diana Donoho of Lovington, who all took special care of Rosa, taking her to church, sharing her coffee-time and feeding her favorite foods on Sundays.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jackson Ave Baptist Church, 837 W. Jackson, Lovington, NM 88260. Visitation will be Thursday, March 24th from 11:00 am until 8:00 pm. Condolences may be sent to www.kirbysmithrogers.com
