Funeral services for Betty Gene Stewart, 94, of Lovington, NM will be held on Friday, April 2, 2021 at 10:00 am at 3rd & Central Church of Christ. Burial will follow at Lovington Cemetery. Betty was born on September 6, 1926 in Eastland, TX to Eugene and Torskey Wood and passed away on March 27, 2021 in Lovington. She graduated from Highland High School in Nolan County, TX at age sixteen as valedictorian. Betty and her brother had the "guitar music show" during their high school years. She then attended Abilene Christian College and taught combined 3rd & 4th grade at Highland. She also worked for the telephone company in Sweetwater. She moved to Hobbs in 1954 and worked at the Income Support Division for the State of NM in 1961 and continued employment there until her retirement as supervisor. After retirement she played the piano at Good Sam and worked with the activities department. She was blessed with a talent for music, playing the guitar, bass guitar, piano and organ and could play by ear also. She would ask what key you wanted it played in and change keys to fit the voices. She enjoyed playing for social and community events and always replied, when ask about her talent, that her musical talent was a gift from God and she wanted to share it with others. Betty was known as a good cook and loved trying new recipes and often took food to anyone who needed encouragement. She was the" hostess with the mostest" and loved having people in her home and feeding them. She sewed and had untold number of crocheted afghans and baby blankets. Reading and playing games and teaching the grandchildren to play canasta, were some of her joys. Betty was not only intelligent and talented but the most important thing in her life was her faith in the Lord and her family.
Preceding her in death were her parents and one brother, Alvin Wood. Surviving her is one daughter: JoAnn and husband Herb McDaniel of Rio Rancho, NM and one son: David and wife Mary Stewart of Lovington; six grandchildren: Mary Elizabeth Eaton of Lubbock, TX; Jonathan Stewart and wife Megan of Lubbock, TX; Brandon McDaniel and wife Kiah of Albuquerque; Dr. Chimene Dahl and husband, Matt of Billings, MT; Sean McDaniel of Billings; Cindi McDaniel of Lusby, MD; Twelve great-grandchildren: Janae Eaton, Hunter Eaton, Kylie Stewart, Hannah Stewart, Scott McDaniel, Connor Dahl, Landon Dahl, Quinn McDaniel, Madison McDaniel, Emmaline Sheahan and Ava Sheahan.
