Obituary of Herbert Filmore Smith

Herbert (Herb) Filmore Smith, 75, of Lovington, NM, went to be with the Lord on the evening of July 7, 2023. Born in Shidler, OK on August 30, 1947, Herb was a proud citizen of the Kaw Nation. He worked in the oilfield for most of his life, starting at DA&S Well Services, and spending the majority of his career at Haliburton Services (26 years). Herb started H&S Services, a parking lot striping business, and later bought K&K Sporting Goods. He served six years in the New Mexico Army National Guard. He was a volunteer firefighter, safety officer, and EMT at the Lovington Fire Department. Herb was a devoted deacon and active member at Hillcrest Baptist Church. Above all, Herb loved spending time with his family and fishing whenever he could. He was preceded in death by his parents: John Elwood Smith and Jetina (Tina) Stephens Smith; as well as his nephew: Sonny Meil. Herb is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Sammie Kay Smith of Lovington;His legacy is carried on by his two daughters: Kimberli Nickell and her husband Tracy of Albuquerque, NM, and Twyla Smith and her partner Misty of Plano, TX; two sisters: Kay Leeson (G.B.) of Tatum, NM, and Judy Chunn (Troy) of Lovington, NM; two grandchildren: Jeremy and Trent; and numerous nieces, great-nieces, nephews, and great-nephews. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 14, 2023 at 11:00 am at Hillcrest Baptist Church with Brother Randy Duncan officiating. Burial will follow at Lovington Cemetery.
