James Edward Snipes Obituary

James Snipes, 84, of Lovington, New Mexico passed away on October 27, 2023. He was known to most friends and acquaintances as Jim. He was born on July 31, 1939 in Fort Sumner, New Mexico to James Albert and Bonnie Louise Snipes. He graduated from Albuquerque High in 1957 and then served in the US Army for 2 years as a military policeman. He attended New Mexico State University and received his bachelor's degree in economics and then UNM in Albuquerque to receive his law degree. He clerked for Supreme Court Justice Judge Compton in Santa Fe, New Mexico before making the decision to move to Lovington. He was a local Attorney in private practice for forty plus years, many of those years as the City Attorney. He was very creative person, painting pictures and sketching drawings. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing, playing chess, and was an avid reader. His children refer to him as a renaissance man. Jim was a member of the Lions Club and the Masonic Lodge over the years.


He was preceded in death by his parents: James and Louise Snipes, and two brothers: Fred Snipes and Doug Snipes.


He is survived by three sons: Dayton Snipes, Brit Snipes, Patrick Morgan Snipes; and one daughter: Justine Flemmons; two brothers: Burt Snipes and Clint Snipes; one sister: Ardis Blanchard; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.


Family will hold a family service at a later date.
