Joe was my missionary “uncle” in Brazil — a colleague and friend to my parents, a role model for me and other MKs. I enjoyed seeing him perform as a ventriloquist on numerous occasions and admired his large collection of Dr. Who episodes on VHS! It was a joy to see Joe and Leona again (in Richmond) when they retired from the FMB/IMB in the 1990s. I will remember him with gratitude, affection, and love for his family.
“Tudo, ó Cristo, a ti entrego.
Corpo e alma, eis aqui.
Este mundo mau renego.
Ó Jesus, me aceita a mim.”

Joe was a wonderful, loving father-in-law. One of my favorite memories spent with Joe was when Jonathan and I travelled back to Brazil for a visit. Joe, Leona, Jonathan, and I were in the car during one of our several road trips while there. I'll never forget us driving across the Brazilian countryside as Joe told many stories of their ministry, experiences, and adventures during their years there. It was priceless. I know Jesus welcomed Joe into Heaven, saying, "Well done, good and faithful servant." Kellie Tarry
