P.S. Sarah, you summed it up well!
P.S.S I have only two regrets--neither of which over I had much control.
The first is that I was not able to finish high school in Lovington. The band where I did, well......it wasn't much fun for me. I grieved that I was not under the musical direction of Mr. Fry.
The second is that I was unable to attend today's Celebration of J.D.'s Life. I felt absent. Despairingly absent. But, I'm doing my own little honor long distance, and if you listen carefully this evening, you might be able to hear TAPS. I'm going down to the Veteran's Memorial on the river, stand by the Navy one, get out my trumpet and play, pointed toward the southeast.
I elect choose to recall my time as a part of the Big Blue Band (in my time--such as Sarah's) there with gratitude.
I also mark this day on my calendar, since this Celebration occurred on a Friday, "Mr. Fry Day"

Mr. Fry,
So soon? It can't possibly be time for you to go. Thank you for your service to this great nation in WWII, for your love of music and that you chose to teach- your insight, talent and sense of humor saw many of us through the plight of being a sixth grader to being a senior and graduation from high school. You saw your students through great change in American society, and showed us how important it is to stay the course. God's peace, much love, many prayers.

"Papa JD", as Steve "Spud" Carter used to call him, was a big part of the total high school experience for so many of us band geeks. He was a hoot! And he put up with so much from us! He taught us so much, too. I still march in place whenever I hear a band playing a march! So many fun times. Rest in pease, Mr. Fry!

I miss you my friend, but I know where you are now, and I'll catch up with you when it's my time. Besides, I'm only a step behind. We all are.
Thank you for the life lessons you taught me, the music--which will never die--, and the personal sacrifice you made on my behalf. Thank you for your time.
Thank you for being a trusted friend who wore many hats for me in my life. Your friendship blessed me for many, many years, and for that I will be grateful always. I am also grateful to have had the opportunity and ability to bless you when I was in town.
So, I'll see you a little further down the road and what a glorious reunion it will be.
In Christian Love,
Rebecca Minton

I vividly remember the first day of band in 5th grade. Mr. Fry helped nurture my love of music. I can't listen to a piece without hearing the parts. After all these years I still play - truly a tribute.

J.D. Fry was a great teacher. He not only taught us to read and play music, he facilitated our learning by teaching us to reason through challenges and to give 100% to everything we attempted. I have thought of him many times over the years with respect and gratitude. A shining star has ascended to heaven.

J.D Fry gave so much of himself to his classes of young people. He worked at teaching them about learning to think ,and plan for a future. I do not know one person who knew him, that did not respect and love him. He will enjoy the good music in Heaven.

My fondest memories of high school are directly related to being a part of the "Big Blue Band", and Mr Fry was a huge part of that. Always a professional and had a fantastic sense of humor. Never could replace someone like that! God be with you.

For all those who knew J.D. well, we will miss his kind spirit and willingness to listen. He had a gift for guiding young people and opened his heart to many making a pathway clearer or more direct. He also was firm and clearly had high expectations of all of us. In many cases his expectations made us do things we never thought possible. His life was a real blessing to me. May God bless his eternal soul.

We both hold J. D. In our hearts with fond memories. He challenged us all to do and be our best. We enjoyed his leadership and will miss him. Charlotte and I started dating while in band. He always had good things to say. His love of Ford Thunderbirds was a trait that gave many of us opportunities to give him grief but he enjoyed the attention!

Some of my most fond school memories were the Friday night band trips and the Cotton Bowl trips of 62 and 64. J.D. will be missed by all the former Big Blue members. Fair seas and following winds my friend.

Mr Fry aka the "Fry Guy", will be greatly missed. As a teacher, he made a tremendous impact on my life. I do not think I recognized the impact until I was much older, and could appreciate it. I think that Hugo Oklahoma with it history of entertainment is a very fitting final resting spot.
