I was born March 4, 1915 to Lucinda(Gibson) and Belve Blackwood in Foster, Oklahoma. I lived on the same farm until I met and married Albert. When I was a kid, I always wanted to move like my friends did. I thought it would be fun to live in a different house after living on the same farm all of my first 18 years. I soon found out moving was no fun.
After I met and married Albert, the moving started. We lived in Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Illinois, in several towns twice. I always found the church in the towns before I found a place to live. The last move was to Denver City, Texas. Albert passed away December 1987. I lived alone for 12 years, then moved to Granbury, Texas in a retirement center for awhile, then with my son, Walton. After my daughter-in-law passed away in 2004, we moved to Wimberley, Texas. I am also preceded in death by my parents, husband, and 2 brothers, Floyd and Dick Blackwood.
I love all of my family. I have one son, Walton Harman and his wife, Ruthie, one daughter, June Shipp, and three grandchildren, Denise Shipp Saylors, Scott Harman and his wife, Ami, and Leslie Harman. I have 2 great-grandchildren, Mariah Saylors and Addison Harman. I have numerous nieces and nephews whom I love as well. I also am blessed with many wonderful friends.
I have seen a lot of changes most have been good. I remember the first airplane I ever saw and the first train ride. Very few people had cars, our mode of travel was a wagon, horseback riding or walking…mostly walking. We lived through the Great Depression, dust storms and all. Don’t know how we survived. My dad was killed in a car wreck just before I was 16 years old, my mother was left with three kids to raise. Back then there was no help from the state or government, no welfare. The Lord only knows how we made it thru the Great Depression. I don’t know what was so great about it….the dust storms, and droughts were terrible.
I lived thru 14 Presidential terms. They are all about the same, from Hoover to Obama.
Written by Ruby Lou Harman
Ruby passed away on April 4, 2011, exactly one month after turning 96 years old. What a long life she lived. There was only one Ruby Lou Blackwood Harman. She was proud of her Native American heritage, being one-half Choctaw. She was a loving and giving person, and stood strong in her faith and praised the Lord in all that she did. She is a true inspiration to all that knew her. God bless you Ruby Lou. God really did need a special angel and now he has one. We love you and will miss you always.
