Funeral services for Leona Sue Mayfield, 71, of Tatum, NM will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 10:00 am at Tatum Church of Christ with Charles Ivie officiating. Burial will follow at Tatum Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Kirby-Smith-Rogers Funeral Home. Leona Sue was born on November 3, 1943 in Groom, Texas to William Earston and Hester Leona (Tidwell) Adams and passed away at Covenant hospital in Lubbock, TX on Sunday, March 15, 2015. She grew up in McLean, Texas and was a feisty and energetic little girl. She enjoyed playing baseball. In her early years she started carhopping and worked in an undergarment factory. Sue was very close to her mother and would frequently go to the diner where her mother worked just to visit or help her out. That is where she would later meet the love of her life, Wayne Mayfield who she would marry on August 15, 1964. She was a strong Christian and a member of the Church of Christ. She loved oil painting and sewing. She enjoyed making her mother’s clothes, western shirts for her husband,and and matching clothes for her children and grandchildren, especially frilly little dresses. Sue liked helping with Brownies and Girls Scouts, was an honor chapter member of FFA, and she was very involved with her husband, children, and grandchildren’s activities. Sue had her own store for a few years called Little Rascals & Tiny Tots. In the last few years she had become an avid fan of “Facebook” where she could contact friends she hadn’t been able to find or talk to before. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grand-mother and friend.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Wayne Mayfield and one sister, Deila Faye Adams.
She is survived by one son: Rodney Wayne and wife Holly Mayfield of Socorro, NM; Two daughters: Lisa and husband Steven Stroud of Tatum, NM,
Lori and Jason Green of Truth or Consequences, NM; Two brothers: Louis Earston and wife Carol Adams of Wichita Falls, TX, James Adams of Elk City, Oklahoma; Two sisters: Iva Mae Cox of Austin, Texas and Leota and husband Delbert of Wheeler, Texas: seven grandchildren: Samantha and husband Ryan Capps of Tatum; Dakota Stroud of Amarillo, TX; Joseph Green and Jaimee Green of T or C; Greg Stover, Ivy Stover, Lilly Stover and Grayson Mayfield of Socorro; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to The Ranches -New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranches at PO Box 9, Belen, NM 87002-9001 or to New Mexico Christian Children’s Home, 1356 New Mexico 236, Portales, New Mexico 88130-9411.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 am until 8:00 pm on Friday, March 20, 2015 with the family in attendance from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the funeral home.
