Obituary of Mariella McCarter

Mariella McCarter January 31, 1921 - January 04, 2010 Funeral services for Mariella McCarter, 88, of Hobbs, NM will be held on Friday, January 8, 2009 at 1:00 pm at First Baptist Church in Jal, NM with Randy Aly and Ray Smith officiating. Burial will follow at 4:00 pm at Prairie Haven Cemetery in Hobbs, NM. Services are being conducted by Kirby-Smith- Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. McCarter was born on January 31, 1921 in Canyon, Texas to Starley Edmond and Ruth (Scharamm) Harris and passed away on January 4, 2010 at Hobbs Health Care. She married William Eldon McCarter on May 23, 1937 in Tucumcari, NM and they shared 55 years of marriage before his death in 1992. They moved to Hobbs in 1952 and joined Taylor Memorial Baptist Church in 1957 where they were very active. Several years ago she moved to Jal and joined First Baptist Church. The last couple of years she has lived at the Beehive and Hobbs Health Care in Hobbs. While in Hobbs she was employed by Wackers in the material department then Parkway Cleaners for ten years and City Cleaners for two years. She then was employed for many years by The Model Shop for Mark and Randy Fields. She was lovingly named “Magic” by the boys as she could take any suit or garment and alter it to fit anyone. Mariella was a multi-talented person painting, making quilts and dolls, and was famous for her outstanding needlework of all kinds. She won many ribbons at Lea County Fair with her talent. Her dry wit was a joy to all. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one son, William E. “Bill” McCarter, one sister, Mozelle Stayon and two brothers, Eddie and Dick Harris. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ruth and husband Dale Pruett of Jal, NM; two sisters: Elda Ruth Gordon of California and Ramona Darnell of Tucumcari, NM and one sister-in-law: Louella Slack of Canyon, TX. Two brother-in-laws, Billy Joe McCarter of Lockney, TX and Sherman and wife Patricia McCarter of Amarillo, TX. Three grandchildren: Eldon Dale and wife Whitney Pruett of Carlsbad, NM; Chris and wife Samantha Pruett of Hobbs, NM and Eddie and wife Twyla Pruett of Bixby, OK and seven great- grandchildren: Josh Pruett of Casa Grande, AZ, Micah Pruett of San Angelo, TX, Duncan Fabbri of Las Cruces, NM, Brian and Mitchell Pruett of Hobbs, NM and Scott and Kaylee Pruett of Bixby, OK and one great-great grandson, Austin Pruett of Bixby, OK. And several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010 from 9:00 am until 4:30 pm at the funeral home in Lovington and Friday, January 8th from 9:30 am until service time at First Baptist Church in Jal.
