Funeral services for Ferrel David Caster, 86, of Tatum, NM will be held on June 29, 2010 at Tatum Methodist Church at 10:00 am with Vaughn Gossman and Wayne Brazil officiating. Burial will follow at Tatum Cemetery. Services are being conducted by Kirby-Smith-Rogers Funeral Home.
Ferrel was born on October 3, 1923 in Moriarty, NM to William Dee and Mary (Selby) Caster and passed away on June 26, 2010 in Odessa, TX. He graduated from Spanish American Normal School in El Rito, NM in 1940 at the young age of 16 and entered Highland University in the fall of that year and began working on his Bachelors degree. He left school and joined the US Army in 1943 during WWII, serving two plus years and fighting in 5 major European campaigns before being honorably discharged as a staff Sergeant. After leaving the service he made his home in Tatum in the fall of 1946 and began teaching in the Tatum Municipal Schools. He returned to Highlands, receiving both his B. A. and M. A. degree. During his 40 years of service in Tatum, he served as a teacher, coach, principal and was superintendent for the last 19 years of his tenure. He was a founding board member and served on the NM Junior College Board for 27 years, later becoming interim president of the college. Ferrel was a long time member of the Tatum Methodist Church and served as lay leader for many years. His favorite hobby was watching and attending sporting events. Whichever sport was in season was his favorite at the time. He married Iris Adele Frier on May 19, 1951 in Tatum. They had three children, Cheri, Dwain and Kyle. She preceded him in death in 1972. In March of 1975, he married Felba Burgess Amis of Levelland, TX and she and her two daughters, Becky and Kathy moved to Tatum. A year later the family was completed by the birth of their son, David Landry Caster.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons: Ferrell Dwain and Odis Kyle Caster; one brother: Warren Caster and one grandson: Collin Bryan Free.
He is survived by his wife Felba of the home; one son: David “Landry” and wife Amy Caster of Ft. Worth, TX; three daughters: Cheri and husband Joey Adams of Tatum; Becky and husband Mike Roark of Midland, TX; and Kathy and husband Joseph Flowers of Sterlington, LA; one brother: Ira Caster of Ruidoso, NM and one sister: Betty and husband Phil Roberts of Tucson, AZ; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and a host of friends.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Home Hospice, 903 N. Sam Houston, Odessa, TX 79761 in his memory.
Visitation will be Monday, June 28th from 10:00 am until 8:00 pm with the family in residence from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.
