Obituary of Jose Prieto

Jose Prieto June 23, 1921 - October 21, 2009 Funeral services for Jose Prieto, 88, of Phoenix, AZ will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Jal, NM with Deacon Emilio Ramos officiating. Burial will follow at Jal Cemetery. Rosary will be Monday, Oct. 26th at 7:00 pm at Kirby-Smith-Rogers Chapel in Lovington. Mr. Prieto was born in Michoacan, Mexico on June 23, 1921 to Blas & Benita (Rodriguez) Prieto and passed away on October 21, 2009 at Phoenix Baptist Hospital in Phoenix, AZ. He grew up in Ogden, Utah on a farm before moving to Phoenix and opening his own business called The Gold Stripping. He was a furniture refinisher and was well known for his excellent work in refinishing antique furniture. He enjoyed his family and raised his two grandchildren as his own when his daughter died. He was a good-hearted man that lent a helping hand when it was needed. He was married to Louise Grover Prieto on May 5, 1974 in Glendale, AZ. She preceded him in death. Also, preceding him in death was his parents, his daughter, Benita Gomez; and two brothers, Juan and Jesus Prieto. Surviving him are his two grandchildren: Frank Gomez of Phoenix, AZ and Christina and husband Donald Colvin of Hobbs, NM; three brothers: Lupe Prieto of West Ogden, Utah, Robert and wife Delphina Prieto of Roy, Utah and Camillo Prieto of Phoenix, AZ; five sisters: Esther Prieto of Odessa, TX; Mary Salazar of Jal, NM; Peggy and husband Solamon Chavez of Avondale, AZ; Shirley Ruiz of Ogden, Utah; and Isabel Herrera of Modesto, CA; and nine great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Monday, Oct. 26, 2009 from 10:00 am until 8:00 pm at Kirby-Smith-Rogers Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the homeless shelter in Hobbs, NM.
