Watch the Tribute Lanina Harriett Shiplet June 01, 1913 - January 30, 2014 Funeral services for Lanina Harriet Shiplet, 100, of Hobbs, NM and formerly of Jal, NM will be held on Monday, February 3 , 2014 at 1:30 pm at Jal Church of Christ with Daryl Micham officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Kirby-Smith-Rogers Funeral Home. Lanina was born on June 1, 1913 in Mineral Wells, Texas to Harry F. and Lillian (Lindsay) Lamm and passed away at Hobbs Health Center on January 30, 2014. Mrs. Shiplet lived in several places when she was growing up and attended elementary school in Seagraves, TX and then her family moved to Tuscon, AZ where she graduated from High school. She returned to Texas and attended Beauty School in Amarillo then worked in Hobbs at a beauty shop. She married Edwin Lee Shiplet in Albuquerque, NM in 1939. They ran a dry cleaners in Trinidad, Colorado and then Portland, Oregon before they came to Jal, NM in 1948 where they owned and operated Shiplet Dry Cleaners until the late 60’s. She was a hard worker but when it was “coffee break” time that was special, everyone got to take their coffee break. After selling the dry cleaners Lanina worked for C. R. Anthony in Jal. She was chosen by the Jal Chamber of Commerce to represent Jal in the 57th Annual Lea County Fair & Rodeo Parade in Lovington as the Jal Pioneer. The pioneers are people who have introduced businesses, organizations, and other ways that have benefitted their community. She was a faithful member of Jal Church of Christ and always helped in the kitchen with Vacation Bible School and Tuesday School. Her life was work, her church and her family. She and her sister Johnnie were always the best of friends and she loved all of her family very much. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, one daughter: Connie Bane; one sister, Johnnie Taylor; and her son-in-law, Joe Tuten. Lanina is survived by two daughters: Sandra Tuten of Jal, NM and Roxie Steel and husband Chuck of LaQuinta, CA; six grandchildren: Kellie Curry, Johnna Dase, Cami Musselwhite, Joandra Navarrette, Chimene & husband Eddie Oborny and Jody & wife Theresa Tuten; ten Great-grandchildren: Victoria, Samantha, Zachary, Conrad,Sarah, Travis, Lindsay, Eddie, Trevor and Jo and one great-great-grandchild and an expected one on the way.
