Dorothy Pearl Skalenda
April 20, 1930 - June 15, 2018
Funeral services for Dorothy Skalenda, 88, of Lubbock, TX, and formerly of Lovington, NM, will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at 3:00 pm at First Christian Church in Lovington with Pastor Gene Wilde III officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Kirby-Smith-Rogers Funeral Home. Dorothy was born on April 20, 1930 in Ames, Oklahoma to Everett and Julia (Vance) Brittain and passed away on June 15, 2018 at her residence. Dorothy attended school in Ames and played forward for their State Championship team. She married Charles F. Skalenda on September 24, 1948 in Enid, OK. They were stationed at Fort Sill in Lawton, OK during the Korean Conflict and subsequently moved to Enid, Oklahoma where Charles finished his business degree. In 1954, they moved to New Mexico where Charles went to work for the IRS. In 1958, Charles and Dorothy purchased an accounting firm in Lovington, NM and began their 34 year journey serving the community. She was a member of First Christian Church in Lovington and Raintree Christian Church in Lubbock, TX. Over the years, she was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, Iris Garden Club, Lovington’s Women’s Club and Chat and Chew Bridge Club. Dorothy loved life to its fullest and cherished her family and friends. Her faith was her solid foundation that she willingly shared with others. Her life was characterized by compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Charles; one daughter: Barbara and three brothers and three sisters.
Surviving her are three daughters: Jeanie Skalenda and Patty Skalenda of Lubbock, TX; Janette and husband, Mike Faris of Lovington: son-in-law: C. A. Heinrich of Enid, OK; two grandsons, six granddaughters, seven great-grandsons (with one on the way) and two great-grandaughters.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Dorothy’s memory to the American Heart Association,&p; PO Box 90790, Albuquerque, NM 87199-0790, or Shriners Hospitals for Children, 3100 Samford Ave, Shreveport, LA 71103.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 22, from 10:00 am until 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Also from 11:00 am until 2:30 pm on Saturday at First Christian Church.
