Lena "Lou" Louise Smith October 07, 1910 - April 24, 2010 Lena Louise "Lou" Smith went to be with our lord on April 24, 2010 at the age of 99 years of age. She was born in Stanford, Texas on October 7, 1910 to Joe Garland and Erie Lucille (Flowers) Taylor. Services will be Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at 10 am at Kirby-Smith-Rogers Chapel with Reverend Vergil Ichtertz officiating and burial will follow at Tatum cemetery. During WWII Lou went to Ft. Worth to help build B24 bombers. In 1948 she moved to Tatum with her children and ran the steak house where she met her love W.C. "Pete" Smith. She was a Lea County Pioneer, lifetime member of Cowbells, member of First United Methodist Church of Tatum where she also served as secretary at one time, BP&W, member of the National Appaloosa Horse Club and Eastern New Mexico Appaloosa Club. She will always be remembered as the” lady with the horse in her yard” making it a New Mexico landmark. She was the most honest person you'd ever meet as well as quick witted. She drove until she was 92 and danced to the end. She planned every aspect of her life, deciding to go to Good Sam of Lovington at the age of 97. Lou was preceded in death by her husband Pete, her parents, her daughter, Dolores Erwin and son-in-law Ralph Erwin, 2 brothers and one sister. She is survived by her son, Dan and wife Jean Cantrell of Alvin, TX ; five grandchildren: Christal Cantrell of Pearland, TX; Belinda Erwin of Hobbs, NM; Donna Adams of Lubbock, Texas; Dickie and Ron Erwin of Austin, TX; Five Great-grand children and 4 Great-Great grandchildren.
