Burial will follow at Lovington Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Kirby-Smith-Rogers Funeral Home. Dickie was born in Morton, Texas on April 28, 1954 to Jimmie F. and Reita Glyn (Carter) Wheeler and passed away at Nor-Lea Hospital on November 20, 2015. He moved with his family to Lovington when he was just a baby and grew up here. He graduated from Lovington High School, married and raised his family here. Dickie started showing steers in 1963 and in 1970 he took his steer to the State Fair and won Grand Champion. He loved showing steers and continued the tradition with his kids and grandkids. He was a proud grandpa when one of the grandkids won with a steer he had raised. Dickie and his brother, Larry, practiced roping during the week and almost every weekend they were traveling somewhere to rope. He had roped in Las Vegas at the “World Series Team Roping” for five years and roped there twice with Larry and they qualified again this year. From his earliest years, all he wanted to do was be outside with his dad at the farm or ranch. He was an “old Soul” as he loved the old music and especially loved listening to “Willie’s Roadhouse”. He married Debbie Carmack March 13, 1996 and they have shared many years of life, love and family together. He was preceded in death by his mother, Reita Glyn Wheeler and his sister, Connie Willyard. Surviving him are his wife, Debbie of the home; his father and step-mom, Jimmie and Doris Wheeler of Lovington; two sons: Trey Wheeler of Hobbs and Ty Wheeler of Lovington; three daughters: Stacie and husband Adam Marquez of Lovington, Tiffany and husband Kyle Williams of Lovington and Stephanie and husband Justin Chimiemti of Long Island, NY; one brother: Larry and wife Sadie Wheeler of Lovington and one sister: Jan and husband Jerry Brian of Yuma, Colorado. Also surviving him are eleven grandchildren: Trinity, Treylee, Meagan, Addison, Rial, Tristyn, Kambree, Avery, Aubree, Jaxon and Stevie Rose and a host of good friends. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 23, 2015 from noon until 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
