Olma Orretta Allen
December 06, 1919 - December 11, 2014
Olma Orretta Allen moved to heaven from Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Nampa, Idaho on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at 5:11p.m. She had lived there for 1 ½ years following a stroke she suffered in June of 2013. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at the Kirby-Smith Rogers Funeral Chapel at 10:00am with Pastor Jack Smith officiating. Burial to follow at Lovington Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, January 16, 2015 from 10-6pm at Kirby Smith Rogers Funeral Home.
Olma was born in Goodlett, Texas to Harve and Lola Newman and moved to Lovington as a child. She graduated from Lovington High School in 1939. On October 5, 1940, she married W.R. (Bill) Allen and they had one child, Rita Darlene. Olma was a supportive and loving wife and mother. She loved gardening, was a voracious reader, and was generous to her family and friends.
After her daughter, Darlene, left for college, she worked as a sales clerk for the next 30 years at Turner’s, Arledges and H & A Men’s Store. She loved her customers, developing quite a clientele. Using her creative talent, she designed beautiful display windows admired by all who saw them.
Olma was a member of the Lovington Church of the Nazarene for many years and then later joined the United Methodist Church, also of Lovington. There she was part of the Circle Rural Lights through which she formed many lasting friendships. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Grandmother’s club.
Bill and Olma lived the majority of their lives in Lovington until they moved to Virginia Beach, VA in 2002 to live with their daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Jack. In May of 2003, Bill died after suffering with emphysema.
In 2005, Jack, Darlene and Olma moved to a new home in Nampa, Idaho, where she remained with them for 8 more years until moving to Kindred in June of 2013. Olma loved Nampa, saying that it reminded her so much of Lovington. She was able to keep up on the Lovington happenings through a gift subscription from the Lovington Leader.
During her time at Kindred, Olma continued to live out her faith in Christ by loving the nurses, aides and other residents. She was equally loved by all who crossed paths with her and greatly loved and cherished by her family.
Olma is survived by her daughter, Rita Darlene and her husband Jack Smith. She had two grandchildren and four great-children. Grandson John Smith and his wife LaDonna, and their children, Wesley and Savannah of Chesapeake, VA; Granddaughter Jennifer and her husband Michael Lady, and their children, Joshua and Luke of Nampa, Idaho; Her sister, Marge Hughes of Riverside, CA; Nieces, Colette Hughes of Gilbert, AZ; Lori and husband Bill Young of El Cajon, CA; Samantha Carlson of Long Beach, CA; Sister-in-law Edisa Teague Nolan and husband Ken of Hobbs, N.M.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Salvation Army, an organization that was dear to Olma’s heart.
