Howard "Chub" Howell
June 16, 1924 - August 15, 2010
Funeral services for H. Howard “Chub” Howell, 86, will be held on Friday, August 20, 2010 at First United Methodist Church at 2:00 pm with Rev. Vergil Ichtertz officiating. Burial will follow at Lovington Cemetery. Services are being conducted by Kirby-Smith-Rogers Funeral Home.
Chub Howell was born on June 16, 1924 in Daingerfield, Texas to J. Frank and Ila Mae Howell. He passed away on August 15, 2010 in Boerne, TX. He graduated from High School at North Texas State Demonstration School in 1942 and he also joined the U. S. Marine Corps in 1942. He proudly served in the Marine Corps during WWII, and was on a troop ship to invade mainland Japan when the war ended. He attended North Texas State University after his service to his country, earning a B.S. degree. It was here that he met the love of his life, Jean Wells. They were married in 1948 and moved to Lovington, New Mexico in 1949 to be teachers in the Lovington Public Schools. He felt it was his calling to be a teacher and serve his fellow man. Later on, he earned his Educational Specialist degree at New Mexico State University. He enjoyed his many years with the Lovington Schools as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and administrator. He retired in 1986 after being in the school system for thirty seven years. Chub had a zest for life and loved hunting, fishing, studying politics, boating, computers, photography, camping – and of course- his grandkids! He and Jean had moved to Boerne, Texas to be closer to family members in 2007.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jean Howell, his sisters: Yvonne Howell Lucas and Martha Howell Edens; his brother: W. C. Howell and his only grandson: Nicholas Drew.
Left behind to cherish his memories are daughters: Donna (Howell) and husband, James Drew of Corpus Christi, TX and daughter: Paula (Howell) and husband, Joe Christo of San Antonio, TX ; two granddaughters: Meredith Christo Ninness and husband, Taylor of Austin, TX and Lindsay Christo of San Antonio, TX. He is also survived by one sister: Mary Kent of Houston, and one brother: Marx Howell of Austin, TX and many nieces and nephews and their children.
Chub’s blessings included being loved by his large extended family and friends who were drawn to his sense of humor and sharp wit. His family and friends draw strength from the assurance that this is not the end, but the beginning of a new life for him with the Lord.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 19th from 1:00 until 8:00 pm. Donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church 407 North Main, Lovington, NM 88260 in lieu of flowers. Condolences may be sent to www.kirbysmithrogers.com.
