Charley was born on January 30, 1931, the third child of Nick G. and Alma (McCausland) Pappas in Wichita Falls, Texas and passed away at his residence in Lovington on January 12, 2011. Charley grew up in Wichita Falls, attended school there and graduated in 1948 from Wichita Falls Senior High School. He attended Hardin College and was voted the most popular boy in his freshman class. He served on the student council when the name was changed to Midwestern University. He joined the US Marine Corps in 1951 and served with the 1st AAA-AW BN Fleet Marine Force and earned the rank of Sergeant. He later served as Commander of Post 68 in Lovington Area 4 and was elected Commander Dept of NM in 2000. He also served as a National officer as Alt. NEC in 2004. When Charley returned to Wichita Falls after the service he worked for the Ft. Worth-Denver RR as a brakeman. He met the love of his life and married Margaret Ann “Peggy” Farley on February 4, 1955 in Wichita Falls, TX. After moving to Lovington, over 50 years ago, he worked in the oifield and was employed by Halliburton for 25 years as a drilling and production consultant. He coached little league, pony and colt league teams and the American Legion Team. He was a community spirited person, loyal to his country and very patriotic. He felt a commitment to the WWII veterans, as they were his heroes and he took many to the VA hospitals all over the State with no thought of being paid for his service. He was a great supporter of the American Legion and all their activities and an all around-good guy. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Peggy, and his highly decorated brother, Capt. Nick G. Pappas Jr. (WWII, Korea, Vietnam). He is survived by his two children: Gregg Pappas of Clovis, NM and Phyllis Pappas of Wichita Falls, TX; one sister: Katherine Parrish of Wichita Falls, TX two sister-in-laws: Kay Bryan of Grandfield, OK and Sharon Welch and husband John of Midland, TX; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends and his faithful dog, Hoagy.
